Vertical Variables V1.0 Will focus on the applications of parametric modeling in the form of towers and skyscrapers. The participants will be guided towards developing skills on computational design and parametric strategies which will lead to form finding and optimization through various parameters. Building morphology will be driven from local site conditions and to social behaviors. The computational approach enables designers and architects to overcome the imposition of a prefixed form in order to enhance performance-driven designs. Lectures on current mainstream and academic research, software tutorials and fabrication prototyping, will be integrated into the workshop, divided into three main parts. The workshop aims to provide participants with the new paradigm of architecture, urban parametric design process. Through parametric algorithms, participants will discover the benefits of variable connected systems to create mass customized duplicate processes by way of building element relationships.
Within the 40 hours course, participants will learn:
Introduction to parametric design and modeling, software introduction of Rhino and Grasshopper plug-in, developing of technical skills for using analytical data –environmental and social patterns - to inform design strategies in form generation
Form behavior analysis and form finding design strategies, defining local parameters and conditions and their interaction with the design, aiming optimum performances and elegance.
Participants will be divided into groups, preparing their own projects. All of them will be presented on a final presentation by the groups, physical model fabrication is also included.
What Participants will learn:
Introduction to Rhino ,Grasshopper and variable building component relationships
Introduction to Galapagos, Kangaroo, Paneling Tools and additional plug-ins
Participants should provide their own laptops with the following software installed. If you do not have the software, trial versions and discount student licenses are available on the companies’ websites.
- Grasshopper (All plug-ins will be announced closer to workshop date)

Vertical Variables Workshop will last 9 days, from May 23 to 31st of May, 2016.
Daily meetings will take place from 5:30pm to 9:30pm at V Business Center
For attending the workshop there is no need for previous software experience.
All projects will be published; exhibition will be organized at the end of the workshop.
Participants need to bring their own laptops and workstations.

Associate @ DesignMorphine
Radul is currently working on his PhD thesis concerning applications of the parametric design in interior spaces. He has completed with Honors his master’s degree in Architecture in the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia, in 2013, Department of Interior Architecture and Design. He has been actively practicing as an architect, designing and realizing various projects such as restaurants, TV studios, office and residential buildings. In 2014, Radul participated in Design Morphine’s workshop Generative Morphologies. His project was published and exhibited as part of The City Exhibition 2014 which took place on Blv. Vitosha, Sofia.
Rasha M. AlShami
is a partner and creative director at 90 Degrees Design Studio. Born in 1992 in Amman, Jordan, Rasha graduated with honors from the Department of Architectural Engineering at the University of Jordan in 2015. With her projects, she won numerous international awards and was published in several architectural websites such as superarchitect ,Koozarch and arch2o. With the team of 90 Degrees Design Studio, she won two honorable mentions in the Oceanic Skyscraper competition 2014 and the Mumbai Steele City competition 2015. She has been accepted to continue her master’s study in computation and parametric design. She gives courses in rendering and architectural visualization as well as theory and design logic. She assisted in several design studios and organized and participated in several workshops in Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.
